These safety upgrades are part of the School Zone Infrastructure Sub Program, funded by the Federal and State Government’s Road Safety Stimulus Program. The program aims to deliver improvements to pedestrian facilities around school zones.
Construction took place in the 2022 April school holidays.
What is being done?
We are improving the pedestrian crossings on Lowe Street, in front of St Gregory’s Primary School and the mid-block crossing on Gorman Drive near The Anglican School in Googong.
Works will include installing ‘wombat’ crossings, widening and raising the centre median and installing 25km/h speed hump signs on both sides of the crossing.
Impact on drivers
The section of Lowe St between Cooma St/Rutledge St and the access to Lowe St Car Park/St Raphael’s Catholic Church will be closed. This section of road will reopen once the concrete speed hump reaches the required strength.
Access to the BP petrol station, Lowe St Carpark and St Raphael’s Catholic Church/St Gregory’s Primary School’s driveway will be via the Farrer Pl and Monaro St end of Lowe St. During this time, drivers should follow any traffic control or detours that are in place.
For the Gorman Drive crossing work will be done in two stages to maintain traffic flow in one direction. Drivers should follow any traffic control or detours that are in place.
Impact on pedestrians
Pedestrians will not be able to cross Gorman Drive at this location while work is being done. Please follow the signs and use alternative routes.
The pedestrian crossing on Lowe Street will be closed. Pedestrians should cross at the traffic signals on Lowe St/Farrer Place/Monaro St while the works are taking place.
