The Jerrabomberra Reservoir is the principal receiving point for the Queanbeyan water supply. This site distributes water to around two thirds of the City of Queanbeyan and the entire of Jerrabomberra. The original 22ML steel reservoir was constructed in the early 1980’s and even at that stage the area immediately around this tank was prepared for a second tank to be constructed at a later date. The time has now come to construct this second tank.
The additional tank is required to address a number of issues. The first is related to the provision of an enhanced level of water security. Given that Queanbeyan is supplied potable water from ICON Water under a bulk supply contract, the security of this supply is entirely dependent on external considerations. The provision of an additional storage reservoir will serve to enhance Council’s supply buffer in the event of any unexpected interruption to ICON’s supply, particularly in peak summer months.
The other key issue relates to the need for some major refurbishment works on the existing 22ML steel reservoir. After being in continual service for around 40 years, it is now time to temporarily decommission this tank to enable some much-needed maintenance. These program of works will undertaken as a separate contract after the construction and commissioning of the new reservoir.
The Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for the project is in now final review. Detailed designs and specifications are being prepared for a 20ML concrete reservoir and adjacent electrical room.
Finalisation of tender documents and determination of REF. Following these tenders will be called for early 2025.
