Based on comments received from the community during a public exhibition period for the Braidwood Floodplain Risk Management Study & Plan (FRMS&P), it became apparent that existing development in Braidwood (including numerous main street retail outlets) is impacted by Major Overland Flow during intense short-duration storm events. Assessment of Major Overland Flows was not included in the scope of the Floodplain Risk Management Study (FRMS) which concentrated on mainstream flooding from creeks. The FRMS did however confirm several significant overland flow paths within the township and as such, a recommendation was included in the Braidwood Floodplain Risk Management Plan (FRMP) for Council to commission an investigation to define the nature of and options to manage Major Overland Flow in the urbanised parts of Braidwood (this project).
The project aims to reduce the impacts of existing flooding and flood liability on the Braidwood community, and to reduce private and public losses resulting from floods by assessing major overland flows and potential mitigation measures.
This project received grant funding from the Australian Government.
We have engaged Lyall & Associates to carry out the Major Overland Flow Investigation.
The following activities will be carried out as part of the design process:
