Council publishes a fortnightly advertisement in the local paper, The Regional Independent. Below you will find the latest advertisement.
At the 27 November 2024 meeting, Council agreed to proceed with the sale of land for unpaid rates for eligible properties.
The sale of land for unpaid rates is a last resort for Council. All properties have a rates and charges debt that is more than five years old, and Council has made repeated attempts to contact overdue ratepayers to arrange payment. Of the original 38 properties, 26 are vacant land, 6 are houses, 3 are units, 2 are other structures and there is one business.
If you are affected or have any questions, please contact us at Ph 1300 735 025 and ask for our Rates team.
We understand this is a difficult and sensitive matter, and we remain available to assist anyone impacted by these actions.
Important Information About Unpaid Rates and Land Sales
Key Information
- Outstanding Debt: The total unpaid rates across these properties exceed $1 million.
- Legal Guidelines: Council is required to follow strict legislative processes to recover unpaid rates, including publishing this list as one of the final steps.
- Upcoming Auction: The properties are scheduled for public auction on 2 May 2025.
- Proceeds: If a property is sold, any proceeds above the unpaid debt will be held in trust and transferred to the owner or their estate if they come forward.
We have exhausted all avenues to contact property owners with unpaid rates that have been outstanding for more than five years. Numerous letters have been sent, door knocks have been conducted, and external agencies have been engaged to assist in finding these landowners. Despite these efforts, some owners remain uncontactable.
Many of the affected properties have been vacant for years or even decades, and most are vacant land. In some instances, there may be no living relatives, or the owners and their families may have moved overseas
What You Can Do
If you recognise someone who may own or have ties to these properties, please let them know. We are committed to working with owners to help them resolve their situation and remove properties from the auction list wherever possible.
Auction details
10am on Friday 2 May at the Queanbeyan Bicentennial Hall, 257 Crawford Street. The auction will be conducted by Ian McNamee and Partners who can be contacted on 6297 5555.

Council has received a request from the proponents of the South Jerrabomberra Urban Release Area to name the road within Estate 2 of the subdivision.
In accordance with our Road Names Policy, Council has worked with the applicant’s consultant and the NSW Geographical Names Board (GNB) to arrive at a list of names which differ from those elsewhere in the local government area and meet the criteria for road naming set down by the GNB. The developer has chosen to continue with the flora theme.
The name Carnation Drive has been chosen from this list of pre-approved road names to progress to approved for use.
Background
Carnation Dianthus caryophyllus, is a loosely-tufted, woody-based herbaceous perennial that features fragrant, pink, purple-pink, or white often double flowers on stiff 30-inch tall stems clad with narrow, linear, grey-green leaves. Dianthus are a favourite for cottage gardens. They're often called carnations, clove pinks or just pinks, because they look like someone's used pinking shears to cut frills around the edges. There are many different varieties with a magnificent fragrance and the flowers are edible. The petals have a very sweet, spicy scent and have been used to flavour vinegars, sauces, and to decorate salads and drinks, cakes and desserts. These tough little perennial plants are well suited to a hot and dry climate because they're just so easy to grow. Plant them on the edge of a garden bed in a sunny spot and you'll find that they will do well.

Consultation regarding the use of indigenous language in road naming has commenced between Ngambri Local Aboriginal Land Council, QPRC’s Aboriginal Liaison Officer and other local indigenous language groups with the expectation that a proportion of new roads to be named in subsequent stages of Estate 2 will be of indigenous origin.
Written comments are invited and can be made until 27 March 2025. They can be email to council@qprc.nsw.gov.au (subject line Proposed road names) or sent to PO Box 90, Queanbeyan NSW 2620.

Reidsdale Road is closed at Bedding Ground Creek to allow for the replacement of the bridge. Local residents will be able to access their properties. The new bridge is expected to be open to traffic late afternoon on Friday 7 March. The bridge will still be under road work signage, with the approaches to be sealed on Wednesday 12 March, weather depending. While the bridge is closed, the detour route is along Monga Lane and Majors Creek Road. Find out more on the project page.
Araluen Road between Majors Creek Road and Monga Lane will be closed from 10 February 2025. Local residents will be able to access their properties. Motorists must follow the detour route along Monga Lane and Majors Creek Road. Detours are anticipated to add 3-8 minutes to overall travel time. This closure is to facilitate the replacement of three bridges on Araluen Road over Jembaicumbene Creek. Find out more on the project page.
